Chi Gong has been in existence for over 2000 years & began as a combination of traditional Chinese ideas combined with the infusion of Budhist Concepts and methods of meditation that came in from India. Chi Kung (Qi Gong) means literally, "Energy Cultivation," & refers to special breathing exercises which improve health and longevity as well as increase the sense of harmony within oneself and in the world.
Chi Gong is actually a specific example of a larger catagory of exercises called Nui Gong (Nei Gong) (literally - "Inner Cultivation"). Nui Kung encompasses a large variety of practices including standing, seated, moving, static & even dreaming exercises. "Internal" martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuan , Ba Gua & Hsing I are also included within this general catagory.
The founders of Chen Tai Chi have acknowledged the benefits of specific Chi Gong exercises outside practice of the Tai Chi forms themselves for 100's of years. At the center of Chen Taiji Quan, are Chen style Internal Exercises (Qi gong). These exercises have been stressed by all Taiji masters & their disciples.
The Exercises utilize deep breathing to gather vital energy at the tantien, a point below the navel, the exerciser tries to change the energy into the incorporeal so that the exerciser returns to original purity and simplicity to achieve an integration of heaven, earth and the human being.
The exercises can serve as an effective cure against chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart trouble, indigestion & arthritis.
